Guest Blogger: Martin Ramirez “How Fears Limits your Success: My Entrepreneurial Journey”

MartinRamirezI often get asked why I started a business in my early twenties instead of going to work for somebody else. I tell them that I started my business because of stupidity and hubris.

The answer usually takes them back a bit. I guess people expect a more sophisticated answer. You see when I jumped into business I had no idea what I was getting into. (Hence the stupidity.) But I just knew that I was going to make it and that my business was going to be successful even against the odds. (Hence the hubris.)

Am I recommending that you quit your job and start a business? No I am not. I honestly believe that entrepreneurship isn’t the right path for everyone and not everyone desires to own a business.
But I do believe that fear holds most of us back.

Many times, I bump into people who hate their jobs or hate where they are in life. While I understand that there are people who find themselves in situations that are extreme, most of us aren’t in those situations.

We don’t take the next step, because we are scared. And then we excuse that fear but saying things like, “I want to be 100% sure” or  “ I’m waiting for the right moment.”

But that “right” moment never seems to come and you’re probably not going to be 100% sure about anything.

In his epic Stanford commencement address, Steve Jobs said something that has stuck with me through my entrepreneurial ups and downs. He said, “Stay hungry. Stay foolish.” I believe that regardless of the path that you take, you must stay hungry for a cause of some sort. In addition, you must stay foolish and be willing to take risks.

My advice: take the first step. Dare to be different. Don’t settle for mediocrity. If there is something you desire to be, fight to achieve it.

If your goal is to get a college degree, fight for it. If you want to get the great job, fight for it. Or if you want to start a business, just fight for it.

Tomorrow will be the result of your actions today, so make it count.
